Synopsis
Voor het eerst gebruikte Jos Stelling een boek als uitgangspunt voor een nieuwe film: De Wisselwachter van Jean-Paul Franssens. Het verhaal gaat over een man die woont in een verlaten station, ver buiten de grote stad, die weinig meer te doen heeft dan letten op de wissels en af en toe bezoek krijgt van de postbode. Dan stapt er, per ongeluk, een vrouw uit de trein. Een heel jaar blijft ze op het eenzame levenseiland van de wisselwachter, wat leidt tot allerlei vreemde ontwikkelingen.
Achtergrond
Om het verloop van de seizoenen goed te kunnen weergeven, werden de opnamen op een afgelegen plek in Schotland over vier seizoenen uitgesmeerd. Jim van der Woude, die al was opgevallen in De Illusionist, speelt de wisselwachter en is een van de sterke punten van de film, die voor menigeen geldt als Stellings beste. In elk geval bevestigde De Wisselwachter onder de Engelse titel The Pointsman zijn reputatie in het buitenland, vooral na een selectie voor de competitie van het festival in Venetië. Hij werd daar overwegend goed ontvangen en kreeg een eervolle vermelding. In Sao Paolo werd daar de publieksprijs aan toegevoegd. Dezelfde prijs kreeg hij op het festival van Madrid en het Portugese festival Fantasporto, waar Jim van der Woude tot beste acteur werd uitgeroepen. Erkenning alom, behalve opnieuw in eigen land, waar het publiek, ondanks merendeels lovende kritieken en een Gouden Kalf op het Nederlands Film Festival, weinig belangstelling toonde.

Using gestures, facial expression, color contrast, and virtually no dialogue (the characters speak two different languages, anyway), director Jos Stelling builds his film on the opposition between virginal pointsman’s emotional aloofness and the blatant, provocative eroticism of his guest, which eventually makes her hostage of his passion.
