Jos Stelling was awarded many national and international prizes for his separate films as well as his entire oeuvre, among others 4 Golden Calfs, the Golden Rose, 2 Golden Gryphons and the St. Petersburg award. His first long feature, Mariken van Nieumeghen, was selected in1975 for the official competition of the Cannes Film festival. On this occasion her majesty Queen Juliana, accompanied by her daughter Princess Beatrix, and personally congratulated Stelling with this big success. In 1996 Stelling was appointed ‘Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion’.
